How to test your internet speed

How to test your internet speed

Running a speed test takes about 30 seconds, but most people do it wrong. They tap a button on their phone while streaming something in the background, see a low number, and decide their internet is garbage. Sometimes they are right. More often the test is the problem.

A good test tells you two distinct things: what your internet plan actually delivers to the house, and what a specific device gets on your network. Those can be very different numbers. Knowing which one you measured is how you figure out what, if anything, to fix.

What the numbers mean

Four metrics come back from every speed test. Here is what each one actually measures.

Download speed is how fast data travels from the internet to your device, in megabits per second (Mbps). Streaming video, loading pages, pulling files down. This is what most people care about, and for most households it is the one that actually matters.

Upload speed goes the other direction. It is how fast data leaves your device and goes out to the internet. It matters for video calls (the other person sees your feed), cloud backups, and sending large files. Most home plans are asymmetric, meaning upload is noticeably lower than download, sometimes much lower.

Ping, also called latency, is the round-trip time for a signal from your device to a server and back, measured in milliseconds. Lower is better. A low ping makes a video call feel like a normal conversation. A high one adds that lag where everyone talks at the same time. Games are extremely sensitive to this.

Jitter is how much ping varies. A steady 20 ms is comfortable. Ping that swings from 8 ms to 60 ms will make video calls stutter and games hiccup even if the average looks fine. Unstable or congested network paths are the usual cause.

How to run an accurate test

The most common mistake is testing on a busy network and then trying to draw conclusions from a number that does not mean much. A few adjustments make the result meaningful.

  1. Use a trusted test: Speedtest.net, Fast.com, or your ISP's own speed tool.
  2. For your true line speed, plug a computer into the router with an Ethernet cable.
  3. Close other apps on the device and pause other devices in the house, including streaming, downloads, and backups.
  4. Let the test pick a nearby server, which reflects your connection rather than the distance to a far-off one.
  5. Run it three or four times and take the typical result, not the single best or worst.

Wired vs Wi-Fi testing

These two tests answer different questions, and conflating them is where most people go wrong.

A wired test, with a computer plugged directly into the router via Ethernet, shows what your internet service is actually delivering. Signal strength, neighboring networks, router distance, walls and floors: none of that factors in. If your wired result is close to your plan speed, your ISP is doing its job.

A Wi-Fi test shows what that specific device gets in that specific spot. It is almost always lower than the wired number, and it depends on distance from the router, what is in between, how many devices are sharing the band, and how crowded the nearby airspace is.

This is why testing only from a phone is misleading. A phone test is a quick gut check, but it measures that phone's Wi-Fi, not your plan. If you always test on a phone in a far bedroom, you will always see a number lower than what your internet actually delivers, and you may end up chasing an ISP problem that is really a Wi-Fi coverage one. Test both and the picture clears up fast. Wired near plan speed but Wi-Fi disappointing? Compare the result to your plan

Internet plans are advertised as "up to" speeds. That ceiling is under ideal conditions, and you will not always hit it.

On a wired connection, off-peak, you should land reasonably close to what you are paying for. A 10 to 15 percent gap is normal overhead, not worth worrying about.

Consistently hitting 60 or 70 percent on a wired connection is a different story. Run a few tests at different times of day, including late evenings when things tend to get congested, and see if the pattern holds. If it does, call your ISP.

Bring timestamps and a few days of results if you can get them. ISPs respond better to patterns than to single screenshots. And sometimes the issue is neighborhood-level congestion on shared infrastructure, which is entirely on them to fix.

Why your speed can look slow

Before calling your ISP, run down the usual suspects. Most of the time it is something on your end.

  • Wi-Fi distance and interference - being far from the router or behind thick walls.
  • An old or overloaded router that cannot keep up with your plan.
  • Too many devices active at once, all sharing the connection.
  • Peak-hour congestion, usually weeknights from about 7 to 10 pm.
  • A VPN, which routes your traffic through another server and can lower the measured speed.
  • Background downloads or app and system updates running while you test.
  • An older plan that no longer matches what your household actually needs.

What to do about a slow result

Go through this in order. Most slowdowns clear up before you have to call anyone.

  1. Retest on a wired connection with other devices idle, to confirm whether the problem is the ISP or your Wi-Fi.
  2. Restart your modem and router, then test again.
  3. If Wi-Fi is the weak point, move the router to a central open spot or add a mesh node.
  4. If wired speeds are still well below your plan across several tests, contact your ISP with your timestamped results.
