5G vs 4G LTE: what is the difference?

Fast mmWave 5G is rare; the common nationwide 5G is often only a bit faster than good LTE. For most people, 4G LTE is still plenty fast for everyday use.
5G vs 4G LTE: what is the difference?

If your phone shows "5G" in the corner, you might assume you are getting something dramatically faster than the 4G it replaced. Sometimes you are. Often you are not. It depends entirely on which type of 5G you are connected to, and your phone will not tell you that part.

Here is what the types mean in practice, how speeds compare, and whether any of it actually matters for how you use your phone.

What 4G LTE and 5G are

4G LTE (Long-Term Evolution) powered smartphones for the better part of the last decade. It made video calls reliable, streaming practical, and navigation fast enough to actually trust. Most of the US has solid LTE coverage today. A decent signal gets you 20 to 100 Mbps in real-world conditions, which is enough for HD streaming, video calls, and everything most people do on a phone.

5G is the next generation. The theoretical speed ceiling is much higher, and latency is lower. But 5G is not one thing. It covers three different technologies operating on different radio frequencies, and they behave very differently from each other. That gap is what most people miss, and it explains why 5G can feel like a genuine upgrade on one street corner and identical to LTE a few blocks away.

The three types of 5G

The 5G icon on your phone tells you nothing about which type you are on. Here are the three.

Low-band 5G (sometimes called nationwide 5G) runs on the same general frequencies as 4G. It reaches far and gets through walls without much trouble. Speeds are usually 30 to 100 Mbps, in the same range as good LTE. If you switched to a 5G phone and felt underwhelmed, this is probably why. The icon changed; the experience mostly did not.

Mid-band 5G, particularly C-band (roughly 3.7 to 4.2 GHz), is where the real difference shows up. Carriers have been building out C-band in cities and suburbs over the past few years. If you connect to it, you will see 200 to 600 Mbps. That is actually different - downloads that used to take a minute finish in seconds. Mid-band is increasingly what you will hit in populated areas.

High-band 5G, or mmWave, can exceed 1 Gbps. The trade-off is range: mmWave barely covers a city block and cannot get through walls or windows. You will find it at specific outdoor spots - a stadium entrance, a convention center, a busy transit hub - but not reliably elsewhere. For most people's daily lives, it barely registers.

Real-world speed

When conditions are good and the network is not congested, here is how the tiers compare.

4G LTE typically lands at 20 to 100 Mbps. That is plenty for streaming at high quality, video calls, large app downloads, and regular browsing. Most of what people do on phones does not push past what LTE can handle.

Low-band 5G comes in around 30 to 100 Mbps, roughly the same range as LTE. The actual benefit is network capacity: more devices can share bandwidth before things get slow. For a single user, the speed difference is often undetectable.

Mid-band 5G runs 200 to 600 Mbps in typical conditions. This is where you feel the difference: movie downloads, large file syncs, bandwidth-heavy apps.

mmWave can hit 1 Gbps, but you will rarely be somewhere you can actually connect to it. Coverage pockets are small even in major cities. If you are trying to figure out whether 5G is making your phone faster, the real question is whether your area has mid-band coverage. LTE and low-band 5G are close enough that most tasks will not feel different.

Latency and why it matters

Latency is the round-trip delay between your device sending a request and receiving a response. Measured in milliseconds, lower is better. LTE typically runs 30 to 50 ms under normal conditions. 5G can get it down to 10 to 20 ms.

For most browsing and streaming, you probably will not notice. A few places where it does matter: on video calls, high latency causes that slight lag after someone finishes speaking, and lower latency makes the back-and-forth feel less awkward. In cloud gaming, input lag tracks directly with latency, so over mobile the difference between 40 ms and 15 ms is real. And real-time apps - live trading tools, AR, remote monitoring - benefit from the lower floor 5G can offer. For streaming, downloading files, or scrolling social media, the latency gap between LTE and 5G will not change how things feel.

Battery and data use

On battery: 5G can draw a little more power than LTE, especially mmWave. Modern phones manage this fairly well. If you are noticing faster drain than expected, both iPhone and Android let you adjust this in cellular settings. 5G Auto switches to LTE when 5G is not providing much benefit, 5G On keeps it active, and LTE Only disables 5G entirely. 5G Auto is the practical default for most people - faster when it matters, lower power when it does not.

On data: 5G does not use more data than 4G for the same activity. Watching the same video at the same quality setting uses identical data whether you are on LTE or 5G. Where you can get into trouble is behavioral - faster speeds make big downloads and high-quality streams feel frictionless, which can push your total usage up if you are not paying attention. The network itself does not add anything.

Do you actually need 5G?

Most phones sold now include 5G, and most carrier plans include it at no extra cost. There is a good chance you are already on it without having thought much about it.

It is not a reason to replace a working phone. If your 4G LTE device handles what you need it to do, the practical speed gap - especially if you would mostly land on low-band 5G anyway - is modest at best. LTE is fast enough for streaming, messaging, maps, and the rest of what most people use their phones for.

5G makes more sense if you are already buying a new device (they almost all have it now), if you are in a city with solid mid-band coverage, or if you do the kind of heavy transfers where the speed difference would actually show up. Otherwise, it is something you will have without noticing, which is fine. You do not need to chase it.
